FRESHMAN ENTREPRENEURS TACKLE AFFORDABLE HOUSING ISSUE

By | Uncategorized | No Comments

Lack of affordable housing is an economic and social problem in many urban environments in the United States. Colorado Springs is not immune to this quandary. The cost of rent here is exorbitant for blue-collar workers. Finding a place to live in Colorado Springs on a minimum wage is almost impossible. The affordable housing issue has been a concern far too long. This dilemma will not just go away without an innovative plan.

Eric Meldrum, Launch High School’s Entrepreneurship Program Director, is working with his freshman class to design possible solutions to the problem. Students have invited local experts on the predicament of homelessness and affordable housing in our community to the Launch to discuss the matter in order to design a viable solution.

The students held a meeting with Katheryn Lilly, Deputy Director of Family Promise of Colorado Springs, to discuss the subject. Ms. Lilly shared her own personal story of being a homeless single mother with 6 children just 5 short years ago right here in Colorado Springs. Ms. Lilly, who now helps families experiencing homeless just like she once was, shared her ideas along with the names of other agencies in our community who are trying to help rectify the problem.

Over 1,600 people are on the Colorado Springs Housing Authority’s low-income housing waiting list and there are many more who never apply. The urgency for a solution is great.

On behalf of our city, thank you and good luck, Launch Freshmen.

Launch Freshman Sobral Start Up Winner

By | Business, Community, Education, Entrepreneur, Events, Featured | No Comments

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to create a company in 54 hours? Launch High School freshman, William Sobral, wonders no more thanks to Startup Weekend Colorado Springs. Last weekend Entrepreneurs gathered to work on ideas and, over the course of the weekend, matured those ideas into viable businesses. A variety of business developers, programmers, designers and other enthusiasts formed six teams that worked tirelessly through the weekend to develop business models that they pitched to a panel of judges two days later. Our Launch High School student teamed up with a few Lockheed Martin folks: an engineer, a systems analyst and a commercial real estate developer.  William was, needless to say, the youngest entrepreneur on the team.

The weekend culminated with finalists’ presentations in front of a panel of judges with another opportunity for critical feedback and a selection of the overall best team. Judging criteria were lumped into 3 primary categories: validation, execution and business model design. The teams were given 5 minutes each to deliver their pitch, followed by another 3 minutes of question-and-answer time with the judges. During his team’s presentation and including the judges’ Q&A afterwards, the team deferred to William to answer almost all of the scientific/logistical questions.  He was not just a team member. He was responsible for much of the “how to” behind the team’s pitch.

William’s team won FIRST place! At the event finale, Courtenay Sobral, William’s mother was approached by Start Up Weekend coaches, judges and his team leader and told repeatedly William is a “prodigy.” What William learned – and the contacts he made last weekend are much more important than the $1,000 prize package or notoriety received. Sobral’s team also won at the UCCS pitch night and his team is now preparing their team pitch for official entry into the Regional Start Up competition.

In the first two years of Launch’s existence, our students have participated, placed and gone on to Denver’s regional competition. Congratulations, William Sobral, and all of our Launch High School Start Up winners!

Launch High School Students Accelerate Through High School Diplomas and College Degrees

By | Education | No Comments

With Launch High School’s Self-Paced Program last year three students finished multiple years worth of classes in one year of school. Through our Concurrent Enrollment Program Launch students simultaneously earn college credits and diploma credits with each course – and Launch pays for tuition and books.

Even younger students take advantage of this program, as two of our 14 year olds are full time students at both Launch High School and Pikes Peak Community College. In fact seven Launch students are due to simultaneously graduate with a High School Diploma from Launch and an Associate Degree from Pikes Peak Community College.

FREE college degree AND a Launch diploma at the same time?
